Filming in Public

Filming in Public

When you're outside of school in the public and need to film b-roll or interviews, there are a few things you need to consider.  People nowadays are nervous when they see video cameras out and about and these are the things you need to do so that you don't offend anyone.

  1. Do your homework and PLAN what you want to do ahead of time so that you aren't trying to make up your mind once you are at the location.  If possible, SCOUT the location before you actually go out so that you are familiar with the layout of the area, the lighting that you might encounter, and the ambient noise that's around you that may affect your shots.
  2. Once you arrive at the location, as your teammate begins to set up the camera, go and ASK PERMISSION from the people you want to film to be sure they are ok with it first.  For example, if you are at a farmer's market and want to film people browsing the fruits and veggies at a particular vendor, go up to the vendor, introduce yourself, and explain why you are there.  Ask for their PERMISSION first.  Do not assume that they are ok with you filming them.  If you go to a community event like the Art Night and want to film inside of a business, you need to ASK PERMISSION FIRST.  Nine times out of ten, people will allow you to film if you ASK PERMISSION FIRST.  If you don't ask, don't be surprised if someone gets in your face and gets upset with you.
